About WellForward

WellForward is a California nonprofit created to bring a proven way of treating well water to rural communities that need it.

Our story

The treatment system was developed at UCLA, where Professor Yoram Cohen's team began work on water treatment for small communities in 2013.

UCLA then built and ran three systems in the Salinas Valley, the first in 2020 and two more in 2022, with funding from the California State Water Resources Control Board and the National Alliance for Water Innovation. The pilot showed that the approach works and that small communities can afford to keep it running.

WellForward was created to take it further: to finance, build and run these systems for many more communities, organized into regional Virtual Water Districts.

Where we're going

Our first Virtual Water District will be in Monterey County. We're also exploring other parts of California with clusters of wells like these, especially farming areas like the Central Valley.
